An Introduction To Substance Abuse Treatment And Insurance Coverage

Understanding Drug And Alcohol Rehab Insurance Coverage

For most people, making the decision to seek substance abuse treatment is a difficult one. And one of the many concerns that families and individuals face when seeking addiction treatment services is how they will afford rehab costs. Fortunately, as of the passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, both government subsidized health insurance plans and private insurance providers are required to cover alcohol rehab and related mental health and drug addiction treatment.

But though the Affordable Care Act requires health insurance companies to pay for drug and alcohol rehab, health insurance plans may differ in the amount of drug and alcohol rehab coverage they provide, meaning that many patients may still face out of pocket expenses.

Even if you can expect to have your insurance cover rehab eventually, insurance coverage for addiction treatment does not necessarily extend to rehab treatment for relapses, and some insurance plans may offer limited rehab treatment options that do not suit your mental health care needs.

Those with health maintenance organization (HMO) insurance plans will also be limited to American addiction centers that are in their network, which could limit their substance abuse treatment options. And, of course, not all patients in need of addiction treatment have health insurance coverage at all.

However, this does not mean that people who do not have an insurance plan or whose insurance company provides incomplete coverage for addiction treatment are entirely without options when it comes to finding cost efficient addiction treatment.

For one thing, low-income patients without private insurance may be eligible for a government subsidized insurance plan like Medicaid, and so could acquire a health insurance provider and insurance plan for a very low cost. Many drug addiction treatment centers also offer payment plans, financial assistance, or scholarship programs to patients without an insurance provider who cannot pay out of pocket.

However, most forms of insurance cover rehab at our addiction treatment center. To find out whether you can expect to have your health insurance cover rehab at our drug and alcohol addiction treatment center, you can also browse a list of insurance providers we work with here.

If you do not see your insurance company listed or do not have insurance coverage, we will still be able to work with you to find a appropriate, affordable options for your drug and alcohol treatment.

The highly customizable nature of our treatment program allows us to provide a variety of levels of care based on a patient’s financial circumstances as well as individual need, and we believe that insurance plans should never stand between a patient and the treatment facility they need. We can also provide without insurance coverage with private payment plans which allow them to pay for their drug and alcohol treatment on a timetable that works for them.

What To Expect From Drug And Alcohol Rehab Facilities

Patients whose drug or alcohol addiction has escalated to a physical dependency may need to begin their journey in a specialized chemical dependency recovery hospital, after which they will likely move on to the appropriate inpatient and outpatient treatment centers.

In an inpatient treatment center, substance use disorder patients live full time at their rehab facilities. In outpatient rehab, patients with substance use disorder live on their own while regularly reporting to their rehab center for intensive treatment.

While inpatient programs are more appropriate than outpatient rehab for patients who are in need of a high level of supervision, inpatient and outpatient services are otherwise relatively similar. Intensive outpatient services can provide similar mental health benefits to patients without restricting their lifestyle as drastically, and even an intensive outpatient program tends to be cheaper than a comparable inpatient one.

Most American addiction centers also offer dual diagnosis treatment, which is treatment for co-occurring mental health problems that may have been fueling a patient’s drug or alcohol abuse. Receiving mental health treatment while in drug or alcohol addiction rehab helps patients ward off substance abuse by addressing the underlying issues as well as the drug abuse itself.

Substance abuse treatment centers also often offer medication-assisted treatment, which provides rehab center patients with medications that can help combat their drug abuse by reducing their cravings. Though this approach is still considered controversial by some American addiction centers, our outpatient rehab center offers medication-assisted treatment in the form of the medication Vivitrol to patients for whom it is appropriate.
