While it may sound like some new street drug with a strange name, flakka is a crystalline substance (usually white or pink in color) that has been around since the 60s. It belongs to a category of drugs commonly referred to as “bath salts,” which have been reported in the media as causing unusual—sometimes wild—behavior.
The reason flakka—or “gravel”—is such an addictive substance is that it consists primarily of alpha-PVP, a highly physically addictive chemical that targets the brain’s pleasure center. This creates a strong sense of euphoria reported by some to be superior to that of cocaine or meth.
One of the reasons people are so drawn to flakka is that it is so much cheaper than the alternatives. In general, the price for flakka is roughly a quarter that of meth. Those who use it often do so to enhance entertainment or leisure activities, injecting, snorting, vaping, or even just eating flakka before going out for the night. Unfortunately, the euphoria of flakka can quickly turn to danger or even death.
As with any drug, along with the blissful high comes a litany of excruciating lows. In addition to the suffering that is struggling with an addiction, flakka can cause a variety of short- and long-term physical and mental effects.
