RECO sits 18 miles south of West Palm Beach — 28 minutes down I-95 from El Cid, SoSo, or Downtown WPB. For Palm Beach County families south of Okeechobee Boulevard, the Delray campus is the nearest PHP/IOP program with an integrated sober-living network and dual-diagnosis psychiatric care built into the daily schedule rather than referred out.
West Palm Beach sits 18 miles north of RECO Intensive’s Delray Beach campus — a 28-minute drive down I-95 or, for residents who prefer Federal Highway, a slightly longer trip past Boynton Beach and Lake Worth Beach. For families in El Cid, Flamingo Park, Northwood Hills, SoSo, or Downtown WPB, that distance matters: south of Okeechobee Boulevard, the Delray campus is the nearest specialist-level Partial Hospitalization Program with a fully integrated sober-living network. Many West Palm Beach clients drive themselves; others coordinate transportation through our admissions team or move into one of our affiliated sober-living residences for the duration of treatment. Either way, the daily commute is short enough that PHP fits into life rather than disrupting it.
PHP is the most intensive level of outpatient care that exists. At RECO, the program runs roughly 30 to 35 clinical hours per week, Monday through Friday, delivering the same daily clinical density as inpatient treatment while allowing clients to sleep at home or in supportive housing. For the right person — one whose overnight environment is stable enough not to actively undermine recovery — that combination produces outcomes the published literature treats as comparable to residential care, at a fraction of the cost and disruption.
What partial hospitalization actually provides
A PHP day at RECO is not a series of scattered appointments. It is a structured clinical schedule built around evidence-based group programming, individual therapy, psychiatric care, and case management, organized into a coherent daily rhythm. Clients receive at least 30 hours of direct clinical contact per week — frequently more — across cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills training, motivational interviewing (MI), and trauma-focused modalities including Trauma-Focused CBT and, where indicated, EMDR. Psychiatric evaluation is built in, not added on. Clients who benefit from medication for addiction treatment — naltrexone or acamprosate for alcohol use disorder, buprenorphine or Vivitrol for opioid use disorder — have their MAT managed by our prescriber as part of the program, not as a separate referral.
For appropriately selected clients, peer-reviewed outcome research shows PHP results that hold up against inpatient treatment on the metrics that matter: sustained abstinence, reduction in substance use days, engagement in continuing care, and quality of life at six and twelve months. The selection criteria are what make that comparability hold. Our full PHP overview walks through how those criteria map onto the ASAM dimensions in detail.
Who steps down into PHP
The most common pathway into PHP at RECO is stepping down from residential care after roughly three to four weeks. By that point, acute withdrawal is resolved, the early-recovery fog has lifted, and the clinical team has enough information to know what the next stage of treatment needs to look like. PHP preserves the daily structure of residential while reintroducing the autonomy — and the real-world triggers — that recovery will eventually have to be tested against.
A second pathway is stepping up. Clients who started in an intensive outpatient program and found the nine to twelve weekly hours weren’t enough — relapses, escalating cravings, mood instability, an unsafe living situation — frequently move up to PHP for a period before stepping back down. The IOP page covers when that step-up is the right call. A third group enters PHP directly from the community. These are clients whose ASAM Dimension 5 and 6 scores (relapse potential and recovery environment) indicate they need PHP-level clinical density, but whose ASAM Dimension 1 (withdrawal risk) and Dimension 2 (biomedical) profiles don’t require the 24-hour medical monitoring of residential treatment.
What the evidence base looks like
The clinical research on partial hospitalization for substance use disorders is consistent on one point: for appropriately selected patients, PHP outcomes are comparable to inpatient outcomes. The key moderating variable — the factor that most determines whether PHP works as well as residential — is housing stability. When the overnight environment actively supports recovery (a sober-living residence, a recovery-aligned family home, a structured living situation without active substance use in the household), PHP delivers the clinical density needed to produce inpatient-equivalent results.
When the overnight environment doesn’t support recovery, that calculus changes. Part of our intake assessment for West Palm Beach clients is an honest conversation about where they sleep. If the home environment is unstable, we recommend pairing PHP with one of our affiliated sober-living residences in the Delray Beach area. The driving distance from those homes to the clinical campus is minutes, not the half-hour from West Palm Beach, which simplifies the daily rhythm of treatment considerably.
What a PHP day looks like at RECO
Most PHP days begin with a morning process or psychoeducation group between 9:00 and 10:30, followed by a skills-based group (DBT distress tolerance, CBT relapse prevention, or a trauma-informed module). Midday is a shared meal — deliberately not a clinical hour, but a structured opportunity for community and informal peer support. Afternoons rotate through experiential modalities: art therapy, expressive arts, yoga, and physical wellness programming alongside the more traditional process work. Individual therapy sessions are woven through the day, typically once or twice per week per client, and psychiatry appointments are scheduled into the structure rather than tacked on.
Group sizes are intentionally kept small. The clinical staff includes licensed therapists with specializations in trauma, co-occurring mental health conditions, and substance use disorder treatment. Many of our clients carry diagnoses on both sides of the dual-diagnosis line — depression, PTSD, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder — and the PHP curriculum is built to address both concurrently rather than sequentially. We treat alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder as the chronic, relapsing conditions they are, with MAT, behavioral therapy, and long-term continuing care planning built into the treatment arc from day one.
Insurance, admissions, and getting started from West Palm Beach
RECO is in-network with most major commercial insurance carriers — Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield (including Florida Blue), United Healthcare, Magellan, and several smaller regional plans. A typical PHP stay runs three to six weeks depending on clinical progress and the original ASAM placement, after which most clients step down into IOP and eventually into aftercare and alumni programming. Our admissions team can usually complete a benefits verification within an hour and walk you through what your specific plan covers; details are on the insurance verification page.
If you’re calling from West Palm Beach — whether you’re a parent in El Cid trying to figure out what comes after a hospitalization in Good Samaritan, a spouse in SoSo looking at relapse after a year of self-managed recovery, or someone in Downtown WPB who has decided privately that the drinking has crossed a line — the clinical intake conversation is the same. We ask about substance use history, prior treatment, medical and psychiatric history, current living situation, and what you’ve already tried. From that conversation we recommend a level of care: PHP, IOP, residential, or something else. We do not pressure West Palm Beach families toward a higher level of care than the clinical picture warrants. Call (866) 396-2008 to start that conversation.
