Anxiety & Addiction Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Integrated anxiety disorder + addiction treatment at RECO Intensive in Delray Beach, FL. CBT, DBT, EMDR, and somatic regulation for panic disorder, GAD, social anxiety, and substance-driven anxiety.

Anxiety & Addiction Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Anxiety and substance use travel together. Up to 60% of people with a substance use disorder also meet criteria for an anxiety disorder, and the relationship runs in both directions — anxiety drives self-medication, and substance use rewires the brain's threat response. Treating one without the other almost guarantees relapse. RECO Intensive's anxiety-and-addiction track addresses both, in parallel, with a clinical team that has been specifically trained for the work.

What we treat under the anxiety umbrella

The clinical category is broad. Our team works with clients across the full range:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) — persistent, pervasive worry that's hard to control
  • Panic Disorder — recurrent panic attacks and the anticipatory fear of them
  • Social Anxiety Disorder — significant fear of social and performance situations
  • Specific Phobias — disabling fears of identifiable triggers
  • Agoraphobia — avoidance of situations where escape feels difficult
  • Selective Mutism, Separation Anxiety — less common but treated when present

How RECO Intensive treats anxiety + addiction together

Treatment is genuinely integrated — not parallel anxiety treatment running alongside parallel addiction treatment, but one coordinated clinical plan. The components:

Comprehensive assessment first

Within the first week, our clinical team distinguishes substance-induced anxiety (often resolves with sobriety) from underlying anxiety disorder (requires treatment in its own right). Our medical workup also rules out medical contributors — thyroid, cardiac, sleep — that show up clinically as anxiety.

Evidence-based therapy

CBT for cognitive restructuring of catastrophic thinking. DBT for distress tolerance and emotion regulation skills. Exposure-based work for phobias and panic. EMDR when anxiety is rooted in trauma.

Somatic and nervous-system work

Our Heart Regulation and Mindfulness tracks teach the body new responses to activation — because anxiety lives in the autonomic nervous system, not just in thoughts.

Medication management when indicated

SSRIs, SNRIs, buspirone, and (carefully) other agents — managed by our psychiatric provider with addiction-specific awareness. Benzodiazepines are used only with the highest clinical caution given their abuse potential.

Who this track serves

Clients whose substance use was driven by self-medication of anxiety. Clients whose anxiety has worsened in early recovery (extremely common — substances were masking the underlying picture). Clients with panic disorder who fear losing control without their substance. Anyone for whom "just stop using" is unrealistic until the anxiety it was numbing gets treated.

Why RECO's approach is different

Most addiction programs treat anxiety as a side issue. Most anxiety clinics aren't addiction-specialized. We staff and train to do both simultaneously, in one coordinated plan — and the difference shows in outcomes. Clients leave knowing how to manage their anxiety without the substance that used to manage it for them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my anxiety actually a separate condition or just from using?

Distinguishing substance-induced anxiety from independent anxiety disorder takes time and sobriety. Our clinical team makes that differential over the first weeks of treatment, not at intake. Substance-induced anxiety often improves substantially within 30 days of sustained sobriety; underlying anxiety disorder requires its own treatment.

Will RECO Intensive prescribe benzodiazepines for my anxiety?

Only with the highest clinical caution. Benzodiazepines carry significant abuse potential and we generally avoid them in addiction-recovery contexts. Our psychiatric provider prefers SSRIs, SNRIs, buspirone, and other non-addictive options — and the evidence supports them.

Can I do trauma work for anxiety while I'm in addiction treatment?

Yes — when clinically ready. We stabilize first (skills, sobriety, alliance) for several weeks before opening trauma processing with EMDR or trauma-focused CBT. Anxiety rooted in trauma often improves substantially with that work.

What if my anxiety gets worse when I stop using?

Common. The substances were masking it. Your treatment plan is built to handle that — somatic regulation work (heart regulation, mindfulness, yoga), medication when indicated, and skills training (CBT, DBT) all run in parallel with the addiction work.

How long does anxiety + addiction treatment usually take?

The acute work happens during your residential/PHP/IOP stay. The skills training is lifelong — most clients leave with a working toolkit and continue outpatient therapy and medication management for months to years after discharge. Many find their anxiety more manageable than it has been in years.

The next step is just one call.
