For Palm Beach Gardens families in PGA National, Mirasol, or BallenIsles, RECO sits 35 minutes south on I-95. Our PHP delivers 30+ clinical hours weekly with psychiatry, CBT, DBT, and trauma-focused work, plus a sober-living option when the overnight environment needs to change first.
Palm Beach Gardens sits 25 miles north of RECO Intensive Delray Beach campus, about a 35-minute drive south on I-95. For families in PGA National, Mirasol, BallenIsles, Frenchman Reserve, or Old Palm, that drive opens access to a partial hospitalization program with a level of clinical density that outpatient practices clustered along PGA Boulevard and Northlake simply are not structured to deliver. PHP is not a once-a-week therapist visit or a brief evening group. It is a full clinical day, five days a week, built around psychiatry, individual therapy, evidence-based group work, and the structured rhythm that early recovery needs to hold.
What partial hospitalization actually provides
A partial hospitalization program is the most intensive level of outpatient care defined under ASAM criteria, Level 2.5, just below 24-hour residential. At RECO, PHP runs roughly 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with clients in clinical programming from mid-morning through late afternoon. Within those hours, you will find psychiatry evaluation and medication management, individual therapy on a weekly cadence, and group programming grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, and trauma-focused modalities including EMDR and Trauma-Focused CBT for clients with co-occurring PTSD.
The point of this density is not volume for its own sake. Early recovery, the first 60 to 90 days off alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, or stimulants, is when the brain is most vulnerable to relapse and least equipped to regulate emotion, sleep, or craving on its own. PHP gives that brain a container. For appropriately selected clients, outcome research shows PHP results comparable to residential care, without the cost or the disruption of leaving home for a month.
Who steps down into PHP
Three pathways lead most people into PHP. The first and most common is stepping down from residential treatment after roughly three to four weeks. Residential stabilizes the acute period and PHP extends the structure as the client begins reintegrating into a less protected environment. The second pathway is stepping up from intensive outpatient when nine hours a week is not holding the recovery. This is often discovered the hard way: a slip, a missed group, a depressive episode that IOP could not catch in time.
The third group enters PHP directly from the community. Sometimes this is a Palm Beach Gardens professional whose drinking has escalated to the point that they cannot keep working but who does not medically require inpatient care. Sometimes it is a young adult home from college whose family recognizes that twice-a-week therapy is not going to interrupt the trajectory. The clinical intake, built around the six ASAM dimensions, determines whether PHP is the right starting point.
What the evidence base looks like
The research literature on PHP for substance use disorders is more developed than most families realize. Multiple studies over the past two decades have compared PHP to inpatient residential for moderate-to-severe substance use disorders and consistently found comparable outcomes on the metrics that matter, including abstinence rates at 6 and 12 months, treatment retention, and reduction in psychiatric symptoms, for appropriately selected patients.
The key moderating variable is housing. When the overnight environment supports recovery, a stable home, an engaged family, or structured sober living, PHP delivers inpatient-level results. When the overnight environment is chaotic, unsafe, or actively using, residential becomes the better fit. This is why our intake spends real time on ASAM Dimension 6, the recovery environment. A client returning each evening to a quiet condo in BallenIsles is in a fundamentally different clinical situation than a client returning to a home where active use is happening.
What a PHP day looks like at RECO
A typical PHP day at RECO follows an intentional rhythm rather than a scattered schedule. Mornings open with a check-in and a process group, a clinician-facilitated space where clients track what is coming up for them: cravings, conflict at home, sleep, the weekend ahead. Mid-morning shifts into psychoeducational or skills-based programming: CBT modules on cognitive distortions, DBT skills for distress tolerance and emotion regulation, motivational interviewing work on ambivalence about sobriety.
Lunch is shared on campus, a small structural detail that matters more than it sounds, because eating together is one of the simplest forms of community early recovery has. Afternoons move into experiential work, trauma-focused therapy when clinically indicated, and individual sessions woven through the day. Psychiatry appointments are scheduled within the week. For clients on medication-assisted treatment, that means continuity on buprenorphine, naltrexone, Vivitrol, or acamprosate without the friction of an outside referral. By late afternoon, clients head home, to family, or to sober living.
How Palm Beach Gardens families engage
The 35-minute drive from Palm Beach Gardens to Delray Beach is, in practice, manageable. Clients commute daily from PGA National, Mirasol, Frenchman Reserve, and Old Palm; families come down for family programming on the days it is offered. For some clients, particularly those whose home environment is not supporting early recovery, our sober-living network in the Delray area becomes the overnight environment during PHP.
On the insurance side, RECO works with most major commercial carriers in Florida, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and United, and our admissions team handles benefits verification before admission so the financial picture is clear from day one. The insurance page details the carriers we are contracted with. Families dealing primarily with alcohol or opioid concerns can read more on the alcohol treatment and heroin and opioid treatment pages. After PHP, most clients step down into IOP and eventually into aftercare and alumni programming.
