Why RECO from Delray Beach

Local options exist. This is the clinical specialist.

PHP is the most intensive form of outpatient care — 30+ clinical hours per week, Monday through Friday, paired with structured sober-living housing. For clients stepping down from residential treatment or stepping up from an IOP that is no longer holding, RECO Intensive offers PHP at our Delray Beach campus with a clinical team that includes addiction medicine, psychiatry, individual therapy, and family services under one roof.

If you live in Delray Beach and you’re weighing partial hospitalization, the practical question usually isn’t whether you need clinical structure — it’s whether you can get that structure without disappearing from your own life. RECO Intensive’s PHP runs out of 140 NE 4th Avenue, a block off Atlantic and walking distance from Pineapple Grove, so a client from Lake Ida, Tropic Isle, Osceola Park, or the Beach District is rarely more than a ten-minute drive from the treatment room. That proximity matters clinically: it means the people you eat dinner with, the AA meeting you’ve been white-knuckling at Crossroads Club on NE 4th Street, and the sponsor you’ve been ducking are all in play during treatment, not deferred until discharge. For Delray residents specifically, PHP becomes less a retreat from your environment and more a supervised, daily reckoning with it. The rest of this page walks through how the program is actually structured, what the clinical week looks like, and how PHP fits into the larger ASAM continuum.

What Partial Hospitalization Actually Means

Partial hospitalization is a term that causes confusion. It does not involve an overnight hospital stay. It means structured clinical programming during the day — typically six hours, five days a week — at an intensity level just below inpatient residential. Clients return to sober-living housing in the evening and on weekends.

The clinical logic is that many people need more intensive treatment than once-weekly outpatient therapy but do not require 24-hour inpatient supervision. PHP fills that gap with real clinical density: individual therapy, group programming, psychiatric care, case management, and family services — all occurring within the same treatment week.

The RECO PHP Schedule and Clinical Components

PHP at RECO runs Monday through Friday at our Delray Beach campus at 140 NE 4th Ave. A typical week includes:

  • Individual sessions with your primary therapist (frequency determined by clinical need)
  • Evidence-based group therapy — CBT, DBT skills, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed groups
  • Psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication management when indicated
  • Process groups organized by clinical theme (grief and loss, family systems, relapse triggers)
  • Experiential and skills-based programming
  • Structured family therapy sessions

PHP clients at RECO typically reside at a RECO sober-living residence during treatment. Homes are located in Delray Beach neighborhoods including Lake Ida and Tropic Isle, within a short drive of our campus. The residential environment is structured but not clinical — it is designed to feel like a transitional home, not an extension of a hospital.

Peer Community and Evening Structure

PHP clients are not left to manage unstructured evening hours independently. Sober-living residences have house managers on-site, structured meal times, curfew expectations, and peer accountability built into the daily rhythm. RECO also facilitates connection to Delray Beach’s active recovery community — 12-step meetings in Pineapple Grove and Downtown Delray, peer social events, and alumni gatherings happen throughout the week within the city. This peer infrastructure is not incidental to PHP recovery; it is a clinical component of it.

Delray Beach’s Atlantic Avenue corridor, with its walkable shops, restaurants, and community spaces, provides PHP clients with opportunities to begin practicing sober social participation in a real-world environment — with clinicians available the next morning to process what came up. For Delray Beach residents, PHP does not require relocation or extended time away from community. The treatment happens here, in the city where recovery also needs to be sustained.

Who PHP Is Appropriate For

PHP is the standard step-down from residential treatment, and the appropriate step-up for clients in IOP who are not clinically stable. It is also the right starting point for clients who:

  • Have completed medical detox and are medically cleared for outpatient care
  • Have a moderate-to-severe substance use disorder that requires more than 15 hours of weekly programming
  • Have a co-occurring psychiatric condition that benefits from daily clinical contact
  • Have an unstable home environment where sober-living residency provides a safer starting point

Dual Diagnosis at the PHP Level

The majority of RECO PHP clients have at least one co-occurring mental health condition. Depression and anxiety are especially common in alcohol use disorder; PTSD is disproportionately prevalent in benzodiazepine dependency. RECO’s PHP does not defer psychiatric care — your psychiatric evaluation occurs in the first week, and medication decisions are made by our in-house clinical team, not referred to an outside provider.

For clients with opioid use disorder, medication-assisted treatment (buprenorphine, naltrexone) is available and managed by our prescribing staff throughout PHP.

Transitioning from PHP to IOP

PHP is not a permanent level of care. As clinical stability improves, clients transition to IOP — reducing programming hours while increasing daily independence. This step-down is planned well in advance by your clinical team and is based on measurable clinical progress, not an arbitrary timeline. After IOP, sober-living and aftercare programming continue the continuum.

For Delray Beach residents, insurance verification and prior authorization for PHP are handled by RECO’s admissions team — you do not need to navigate that process independently. We accept Florida Blue, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, and BCBS, and provide a clear cost estimate before admission. Benefits verification is typically completed the same business day. Call (866) 396-2008 to speak with an admissions counselor, or begin the process on our admissions page.

Common questions

From Delray Beach callers, most asked.

How many hours per week is PHP at RECO Intensive?
PHP at RECO runs approximately six hours per day, five days per week — totaling 30 or more clinical hours per week. This includes individual therapy, group programming, psychiatric services, and case management. Evenings and weekends are spent at a RECO sober-living residence in Delray Beach. PHP is the most intensive level of outpatient care available.
Do I have to live in RECO sober housing during PHP?
Sober-living residency is required for most PHP clients. The clinical rationale is that the 18 hours outside of daily programming are part of recovery — not a break from it. Sober-living provides accountability, peer support, and a substance-free environment during those hours. In rare cases where a client has an exceptionally stable home environment and a strong personal support network, the clinical team may evaluate alternatives.
What is the difference between PHP and residential treatment?
Residential treatment involves 24-hour clinical supervision — clients live on-site at a treatment facility with staff present around the clock. PHP clients live in sober-housing and commute to programming during the day. Residential is appropriate for clients who need the highest level of structure and supervision, or whose home environment is unsafe. PHP provides equivalent daily clinical hours with greater autonomy after hours.
Can PHP treat co-occurring depression or anxiety alongside addiction?
Yes. Dual-diagnosis treatment is integrated into PHP, not offered as a separate track. Your psychiatric evaluation occurs in the first week, and if depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder is identified, your psychiatrist works directly with your primary therapist to coordinate care. Medication management, when appropriate, is handled by RECO's in-house prescribing staff throughout your PHP enrollment.
How long does PHP last before stepping down to IOP?
Most clients complete PHP in four to six weeks, though duration depends on clinical progress, co-occurring conditions, and insurance coverage. Step-down decisions are made jointly by your primary therapist, psychiatrist, and case manager based on measurable clinical criteria — not administrative timelines. We do not discharge clients from PHP to IOP before they are ready.
Does insurance cover PHP at RECO for Delray Beach residents?
RECO accepts Florida Blue, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, and BCBS. PHP is a covered level of care under most major insurance plans when it is clinically indicated. Our admissions team conducts insurance verification — typically same-day — and provides a clear estimate of any out-of-pocket costs before admission. Call (866) 396-2008 or visit our insurance page to start the verification.
I live in Delray Beach — can I keep working part-time or parenting school-age kids during PHP at RECO?
PHP is a six-hour clinical day, typically 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, which means traditional full-time work is not realistic during this phase — that level of demand is part of why your clinical team may have recommended PHP over IOP in the first place. That said, Delray Beach residents living at home during PHP are often able to handle school pickup at Plumosa or Banyan Creek after the 3 p.m. release, attend evening parenting responsibilities, and in some cases continue limited self-employed or remote work in the evenings if their primary therapist signs off. Working a structured shift job during PHP is generally discouraged because it competes with the cognitive and emotional bandwidth the clinical work requires. If sustained work or custody obligations cannot be paused, your treatment team may discuss stepping into IOP earlier or building a hybrid schedule, weighed against ASAM Dimension 6 (recovery environment) criteria.
How is doing PHP at RECO different from enrolling in a smaller Delray Beach outpatient clinic five minutes from my house?
On paper both are local Delray Beach options, but the clinical density is not comparable. A standalone outpatient clinic in Delray typically offers one to three hours of therapy a few days a week, often without on-site psychiatric prescribing, integrated medication-assisted treatment with naltrexone, acamprosate, buprenorphine, or Vivitrol, or formal case management. RECO's PHP at 140 NE 4th Avenue delivers roughly thirty clinical hours per week including individual therapy, CBT and DBT groups, trauma-focused work with EMDR when indicated, psychiatric medication management, and family programming inside a single coordinated treatment plan. The other meaningful difference is the step-down structure: PHP is designed to transition cleanly into IOP and then outpatient with the same clinical team, rather than restarting intake somewhere new each time the level of care changes.
