RECO Intensive Is Now In-Network with Cigna Healthcare

We are proud to announce RECO Intensive is now an in-network provider for Cigna Healthcare, expanding access to expert addiction and mental health treatment for Cigna members across South Florida.

Today we’re proud to share that RECO Intensive is now an in-network provider for Cigna Healthcare. For families across South Florida who have insurance through a Cigna commercial plan, that single sentence changes what recovery can look like, and how quickly it can start.

For years, our admissions team has watched the same painful pattern play out on the phone. A parent calls about a son who has finally said the word “help.” A spouse calls at 11 p.m. because tonight was the night things could not continue. The person is ready. The clinical fit is right. And then the conversation turns to insurance, and a benefits check that should have taken minutes turns into out-of-network math, prior authorization tangles, and higher out-of-pocket costs that quietly push care out of reach. Every time that happens, a window closes.

Joining Cigna’s in-network provider directory is our way of closing that gap on behalf of a very specific group of people: Cigna members, their families, and the referring clinicians who trust us to catch them. It means clearer costs, fewer surprises, and a straighter line from that first hard call to the first day of treatment. It is the outcome of a partnership our leadership team has quietly worked toward for a long time, and it belongs to every clinician, nurse, alumni volunteer, and admissions coordinator who helped make our program strong enough to earn it.

The full plan-by-plan detail lives on our Cigna coverage guide. This post is the announcement, and the story of the team ready to welcome you.

Why this matters for South Florida recovery

Cigna is one of the largest commercial health insurers in the United States, with approximately 19 million U.S. medical customers as of the company’s most recent public filings, and a substantial book of business across Florida through both employer-sponsored plans and individual coverage. For prospective clients across Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties, a Cigna card is one of the most common ones our admissions team sees. Being in network with a payer of that size is not a marketing line. It is the difference between a family finding us and a family running out of options.

Three things change for Cigna members starting today.

Cost predictability. In-network status means your care is billed at Cigna’s contracted rates, and your out-of-pocket responsibility follows your plan’s in-network deductible, copay, and coinsurance structure. There is no out-of-network gap to negotiate, no balance-billing surprise weeks after admission. When our team quotes your responsibility during verification, that quote reflects what Cigna and RECO Intensive have already agreed to.

A cleaner authorization path. Behavioral health authorizations, level-of-care reviews, and continued-stay reviews all move through established in-network workflows. Our utilization review team works directly with Cigna’s behavioral health reviewers using the same criteria your plan applies to every in-network provider. The result: faster answers, and fewer moments where clinical decisions get held up at the payer’s desk.

Full continuum under one clinical team. A Cigna member who steps into RECO Intensive for a partial hospitalization program (PHP) can step down into an intensive outpatient program (IOP), then outpatient, then alumni support, without switching providers, changing therapists, or restarting an intake. The clinical relationship that gets built in week one is the same one that carries into month six. That continuity is a documented driver of long-term recovery outcomes, and it is now available to Cigna members without a network penalty.

The clinicians you’ll work with

Insurance opens a door. The people on the other side of the door are what actually matter. Here are a few of the clinicians who lead care at RECO Intensive and will be part of a Cigna member’s treatment team.

Alexander Scheuermann, DO — Medical Director. Board-certified physician overseeing the medical program, medication management, and clinical decision-making across all levels of care at RECO Intensive. For Cigna members, Dr. Scheuermann’s role means every treatment plan is medically reviewed by the same director who sets the standard for the whole program.

Anthony Campo, MD — Psychiatrist. Provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management for clients presenting with co-occurring mental health conditions alongside substance use. Cigna’s parity-protected behavioral health benefits are what make comprehensive dual-diagnosis care like this financially accessible.

Charles Norris, MD — Physician. Contributes to medical assessment and ongoing care for clients across the program, with particular attention to the medical complications that so often accompany chronic substance use.

Anton Bonci, MD — Physician. Rounds out the medical team providing continuity of medical oversight for clients as they move through levels of care.

Kathleen Simervil, MSPA, PA-C, CAQ-Psych — Certified Physician Assistant with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Psychiatry, one of the most specialized psychiatric PA credentials in the field. Kathleen supports evaluation, medication management, and integrated behavioral health care alongside our physicians.

David Levin, LCSW, CAP, CMHP — Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Addiction Professional, and Certified Mental Health Professional. David brings a combined clinical and addiction-specific lens to individual and group therapy — the exact kind of dual training a Cigna member with a co-occurring diagnosis needs sitting across from them in the therapy room.

Allison Steiner, LCSW — Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing individual therapy, group facilitation, and family work. Allison is one of the clinicians a client will spend the most hours with, and her role is a good reminder that outcomes in behavioral health are built one relationship at a time.

Behind these named clinicians is a wider team of therapists, nurses, case managers, family liaisons, admissions coordinators, and alumni support staff. Every one of them helps make the in-network experience feel like more than a billing arrangement. You can meet the full team on our team page.

What Cigna coverage unlocks

The clinical scope Cigna members can now access in network at RECO Intensive is the same comprehensive continuum we offer every client. Nothing is stripped down for insurance reasons.

  • Full continuum of care. Partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient services delivered by the same clinical team, with a structured step-down pathway rather than an abrupt discharge. Learn more about our partial hospitalization program and intensive outpatient program.
  • Dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders. Integrated treatment for substance use disorders that appear alongside depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions. Our clinical model treats both sides of a co-occurring picture together, rather than in silos. Details on our co-occurring disorders program.
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT). For clients recovering from opioid or alcohol use disorder, evidence-based medications such as buprenorphine, naltrexone (including Vivitrol), and acamprosate are available where clinically indicated, prescribed and monitored by our medical team.
  • Trauma-informed care. Cognitive processing therapy, EMDR, somatic and group-based trauma work delivered by clinicians trained to recognize how trauma histories drive addiction.
  • Family programming. Structured family therapy sessions and family weekends that bring loved ones into the treatment plan — because relapse and recovery both happen at home.
  • Aftercare and alumni support. A clear post-treatment plan, active alumni community, and check-in structure that continues after the intensive phase of care ends.

Every one of those services is described in more depth — and mapped to specific Cigna plan tiers, authorization requirements, and typical out-of-pocket ranges — on our full Cigna coverage guide.

The RECO Intensive story

RECO Intensive has served South Florida for more than a decade from our flagship campus at 140 NE 4th Avenue in Delray Beach, in the heart of one of the country’s most established recovery communities. What started as a single intensive outpatient program has grown, thoughtfully and one accreditation at a time, into a full continuum of adult addiction and co-occurring mental health care.

Our program holds accreditation from CARF International and The Joint Commission — the two most rigorous independent accrediting bodies in behavioral healthcare. That combination is uncommon. It requires standing up to two separate frameworks of clinical, safety, ethics, governance, and outcomes review, and it is a large part of why in-network partnerships with major payers are possible in the first place. Insurance networks like Cigna do their own credentialing, and the accreditations we already carry make that process a validation of work we were doing anyway.

Beyond accreditation, RECO Intensive carries more than 40 professional credentials, memberships, and affiliations across clinical, ethical, and community-service organizations — from NAATP membership to state licensure to specialty certifications held by our clinicians. The full picture lives on our accreditations page. Individually, each credential is a line on a document. Together, they represent a program that has chosen, again and again, to be measured by outside eyes.

Our clinical philosophy is unglamorous and specific: match the level of care to the level of clinical need, treat co-occurring conditions together rather than sequentially, keep family in the room, and stay connected long after formal treatment ends. That is what a Cigna member is buying into, and it is what we believe good in-network care should look like everywhere.

A note on access and equity

It is worth naming why an in-network announcement is a substantive story, and not just a business one.

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), signed into federal law in 2008 and strengthened by subsequent rulemaking, requires group health plans and insurers to cover mental health and substance use benefits on terms no more restrictive than the terms applied to medical and surgical benefits. In practice, parity enforcement has been uneven, and network adequacy for behavioral health has lagged for years behind network adequacy for physical health. When a specialty addiction and mental health provider joins a major commercial network, it is one small, concrete way the parity promise gets closer to real.

The scale of the gap is worth stating plainly. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health, roughly 48 million Americans aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder in the past year, and only about one in four received any treatment. The gap between who needs care and who receives it is one of the largest in American healthcare. In-network access is not the whole answer, but it is one of the most measurable levers a treatment provider can pull.

Being in network with Cigna is one lever. There will be others. We intend to keep pulling them.

How to get started

If you are a Cigna member, or you’re calling on behalf of one, here is the simplest path.

  1. Verify your coverage. Call our admissions team directly at (866) 396-2008. Have your Cigna member ID card handy. Verification is free, confidential, and typically takes under 15 minutes. You can also start the process online through our insurance verification form, or search “RECO Intensive” in your myCigna member portal to confirm in-network status on Cigna’s side.
  2. Complete a clinical assessment. Once benefits are confirmed, one of our clinicians will complete a confidential assessment — by phone, by video, or in person — to understand what’s happening and recommend the right level of care. There is no obligation, and the assessment itself is at no cost.
  3. Meet your team and begin. If we’re the right fit, we’ll walk you through admission, introduce you to your primary therapist and medical provider, and build the initial treatment plan together. For many Cigna members, that whole sequence can happen within days of the first call.

Things to have ready when you call: your Cigna member ID card, a brief description of the substance and mental health picture (as much or as little as you’re comfortable sharing at first), current medications, and any recent treatment history. You do not need to have all of it. Our admissions team is trained to meet you exactly where you are.

For anything not covered above, our Cigna coverage guide and admissions page answer the most common questions, and our contact page lists every way to reach us.

Thank you, and what comes next

Bringing a partnership like this across the finish line takes years, and it takes people. Our leadership, our clinical directors, our credentialing team, our utilization review clinicians, our admissions coordinators, and the Cigna network development team on the other side of the table — thank you. This announcement belongs to all of you.

It also belongs to every alumni family who trusted us before this partnership existed, and whose outcomes are the reason a partnership like this is possible. If you are one of those families reading this: your recovery is the resume that opens these doors.

This is one milestone. There are more we are working toward — broader payer relationships, deeper measurement of long-term outcomes, and continued investment in the clinical program that all of this rests on. We’ll share those as they land.

For the full plan-by-plan, PHP-to-outpatient breakdown of what this partnership means for Cigna members, please read our full Cigna coverage guide. To begin the verification and assessment process today, call us at (866) 396-2008.

Welcome to the network. We’re ready when you are.
