RECO sits about 11 miles south of Lantana — 18 minutes down Federal Highway, or a slower scenic run along A1A through Manalapan and Ocean Ridge. For Hypoluxo Island and Old Town Lantana families, we are the closest clinically-led detox-to-PHP pathway north of Broward County. Detox happens at a 24/7 medically supervised partner facility, and admission into RECO's residential or PHP program is arranged before withdrawal even begins — no transfer gaps, no waitlist.
For families in Lantana watching a loved one shake through alcohol withdrawal or cycling through opioid relapses, the first clinical question is rarely “what program” — it’s “where can detox safely happen, and what comes next?” RECO Intensive sits about 11 miles south of Lantana, roughly 18 minutes down Federal Highway or a quieter run along A1A past Manalapan and Ocean Ridge. For residents of Hypoluxo Island, Old Town Lantana, and the small barrier-island enclaves between Delray Beach and West Palm, we’re the closest clinically-led detox-to-PHP pathway north of the Broward County line. Medical detox itself happens at a partner facility with 24/7 nursing coverage; the moment that phase is stable, admission moves directly into RECO’s own residential care or partial hospitalization program — no transfer paperwork between unrelated organizations, no waitlist gap.
When medical detox is the right starting point
Detox is not the right entry point for every substance, and we say that plainly. Medical detox is clinically indicated when the physiology of withdrawal itself carries real risk — meaning, in most cases, alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids. Alcohol withdrawal can progress to seizures and delirium tremens, particularly in people with daily heavy use, prior withdrawal episodes, or co-occurring liver disease. Benzodiazepine withdrawal carries a similar seizure risk and almost always requires a slow, supervised taper rather than abrupt discontinuation. Opioid withdrawal is rarely fatal in otherwise healthy adults, but it is medically miserable, the relapse risk during acute withdrawal is high, and the overdose risk after even a brief abstinence is well documented.
Stimulant withdrawal — cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription amphetamines — is a different picture. It is rarely medically dangerous, but the crash phase brings severe depression, anhedonia, hypersomnia, and in some cases suicidal ideation. A supervised setting is still valuable for those days, even if the intervention is more emotional and behavioral than pharmacologic. Our intake clinicians use the ASAM criteria to assess all six dimensions — acute intoxication and withdrawal, biomedical conditions, emotional/behavioral/cognitive complications, readiness to change, relapse potential, and recovery environment — before recommending a level of care. The recommendation might be detox first, or it might be direct entry into PHP. We tell you which, and why.
What 24/7 medical supervision actually looks like
Inside a detox facility, “medical supervision” is concrete, not a marketing phrase. Vital signs — heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation — are checked on a defined schedule, typically every two to four hours during the acute phase. Nursing staff use validated withdrawal scales: CIWA-Ar (the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol, revised) for alcohol, and COWS (the Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale) for opioids. These scales are not bureaucratic checkboxes; they drive medication decisions. A rising CIWA score means a benzodiazepine dose adjustment to prevent seizures. A rising COWS score guides the timing of buprenorphine induction so that precipitated withdrawal is avoided.
Medication management during detox is symptom-directed and protocol-driven. For alcohol, that typically means a benzodiazepine taper (most commonly lorazepam or chlordiazepoxide), thiamine and folate supplementation, and treatment of nausea, insomnia, and hypertension as they arise. For opioids, buprenorphine-naloxone or clonidine-based regimens reduce craving and autonomic symptoms. For benzodiazepines, the taper itself is the treatment, often using a longer-acting agent. Detox is a medical procedure. It is not a test of willpower, and white-knuckling at home is not a clinically equivalent option.
Direct continuity into residential or PHP
The point in treatment where most people fall through the cracks is the handoff out of detox. A patient finishes five to seven days of medically managed withdrawal, gets a discharge packet and a list of phone numbers, and is expected to find the next level of care on their own — often in the most vulnerable window of early sobriety. We built the RECO model specifically to close that gap.
When a Lantana resident enters detox through one of our partner facilities, the admission to RECO’s PHP or residential program is already scheduled before detox begins. The clinical team that will manage your care — the primary therapist, the psychiatrist, the case manager — receives the detox handoff directly. Medication lists, withdrawal course, any complications, family contacts, and the ASAM-driven treatment plan all transfer in a single warm handoff. No re-telling your history. No lost momentum. No days spent on a couch waiting for a bed to open.
Medication-assisted induction during detox
For opioid use disorder specifically, the detox window is the ideal moment to start medication-assisted treatment. Buprenorphine induction during the supervised withdrawal phase substantially reduces craving, blunts the post-acute withdrawal symptoms that drive early relapse, and gives the brain time to begin recalibrating before behavioral work begins. Our psychiatry team coordinates MAT initiation directly with the detox partner facility so that by the time you transition into residential or PHP, the medication regimen is already stable and effective.
For alcohol use disorder, the MAT options are different but equally evidence-based. Naltrexone (oral or as monthly Vivitrol injection) reduces the reinforcing effects of alcohol. Acamprosate helps stabilize the post-acute withdrawal phase, particularly the sleep disturbance and anxiety that often drive return to use in months two and three. We discuss these options openly during the detox-to-residential transition rather than treating medication as a last resort. Local proof points, insurance, and how to start
For most Lantana families, the practical questions come down to logistics: who pays, how long, and what happens after. RECO is in-network with most major commercial carriers — Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, and several others. Our admissions team verifies benefits before you commit, so you know what detox, residential, and PHP will actually cost out of pocket. You can start that process through our insurance verification page or by phone.
After the acute treatment phases, continuity continues. Many Lantana clients step down through our intensive outpatient program, often while living in our sober-living network in the Delray area, before returning home. Our aftercare and alumni program stays connected for the long haul. The drive home up A1A through Ocean Ridge and Manalapan is short enough that family involvement — weekly family therapy, weekend visits during residential — is genuinely practical, not theoretical.
