Why RECO from Hollywood

Local options exist. This is the clinical specialist.

Hollywood is 35 miles south of our Delray Beach campus, roughly 50 minutes up I-95 outside of rush. Most clients from Hollywood Beach, Emerald Hills, and Hollywood Lakes pair our PHP or residential track with on-site sober-living rather than commute, which puts physical distance between treatment and the routines that surround active drinking. Addiction psychiatry, primary therapy, and family work are all in-house, so medication decisions and clinical decisions move together instead of through outside referrals.

From Hollywood, FL the drive to our Delray Beach campus is about 35 miles up I-95 — roughly 50 minutes outside of rush hour, longer if you leave during the morning crawl through Fort Lauderdale. Most clients who come to RECO Intensive from Hollywood Beach, Emerald Hills, Hollywood Lakes, Hollywood Hills, or Oakwood do not commute daily. They combine the partial hospitalization or residential phase with on-site sober-living in Delray, returning home for family weekends and milestone events. The distance is intentional rather than incidental: a 35-mile separation between treatment hours and the bars, friends, liquor cabinets, and routines that surround active alcohol use is, clinically, an asset. It gives the early weeks of sobriety room to settle before they are tested against the environment that shaped the drinking pattern.

Alcohol use disorder is the focus of this page because it is one of the most common reasons clients in South Florida reach out, and because the clinical answer to it is more specific than “go to rehab.” Our alcohol program is a continuum — medical assessment and detox where indicated, residential or partial hospitalization for stabilization, intensive outpatient as structure tapers, and a step-down through sober-living into aftercare and alumni programming. Medication-assisted treatment with naltrexone or acamprosate is integrated where the clinical picture supports it, and the treatment team specializes in alcohol use disorder rather than treating it as one diagnosis among many.

Why alcohol use disorder requires specialized medical attention

Alcohol is one of the few substances where withdrawal itself can be dangerous. Unlike cannabis or stimulants, where withdrawal is uncomfortable but rarely medically urgent, alcohol withdrawal can produce seizures, autonomic instability, and delirium tremens in cases where dependence is significant. The risk is highest in clients with a long daily-drinking history, prior withdrawal seizures, or co-occurring medical issues — but it is not limited to severe cases, and self-managed withdrawal at home is not a safe assumption.

Before any client is placed in a level of care, our team conducts an assessment that maps to the six ASAM dimensions — acute intoxication and withdrawal potential, biomedical conditions, emotional and cognitive conditions, readiness to change, relapse potential, and recovery environment. That assessment determines whether medical detox is needed, whether residential care is the right starting point, or whether PHP or IOP is appropriate from day one. Even when withdrawal severity is moderate, medical evaluation is part of admission, not an afterthought. For a deeper look at the clinical model, see our alcohol addiction treatment page.

Medication-assisted treatment for alcohol use disorder

The evidence base for medication in alcohol use disorder is strong and underused. Naltrexone — taken orally or as the monthly Vivitrol injection — reduces the reinforcing effects of alcohol and the intensity of cravings. Acamprosate supports the neurochemical recalibration that follows extended drinking and is particularly useful in clients who have already achieved abstinence and are trying to maintain it. Disulfiram remains an option in select cases. None of these medications are a substitute for therapy, but in combination with therapy they meaningfully improve outcomes.

At RECO, addiction psychiatry is in-house. That means a medication decision is not a referral to an outside prescriber and a three-week wait — it happens in the same building, on the same week, as the therapy plan. If a client is taking naltrexone, the therapist knows. If craving spikes during week four of IOP, the psychiatrist can adjust the dose without the therapeutic frame falling apart in the meantime. The same integration applies to opioid pharmacotherapy with buprenorphine for clients whose primary presentation is opioid rather than alcohol, covered in detail on our opioid treatment page.

The behavioral therapy component

Medication addresses the neurobiology. Therapy addresses the patterns the drinking served — the way alcohol was used to manage anxiety, sleep, social discomfort, grief, or unprocessed trauma. The backbone of our alcohol program is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, with Dialectical Behavior Therapy added for clients whose emotional regulation is part of the picture. EMDR and Trauma-Focused CBT are available for clients whose drinking is downstream of traumatic experiences that were never adequately addressed.

These modalities are delivered in both group and individual formats. Group work happens daily across PHP and IOP — including process groups, relapse prevention, dual diagnosis groups for co-occurring depression and anxiety, and skills-based DBT groups. Individual therapy is weekly with a consistent primary therapist who follows the client through the continuum from residential care down through IOP, so the therapeutic relationship survives the level-of-care transitions rather than restarting at each step.

Family therapy from week one

Alcohol use disorder is a family illness. By the time a client reaches treatment, the people closest to them have usually spent years adjusting around the drinking — covering at work, managing the kids around bad nights, taking the car keys, not taking the car keys, hoping this one would be the last episode. Recovery without family work treats only half the system.

Family therapy at RECO begins during the intake week, not after discharge planning. Weekly sessions with the primary therapist include the spouse, partner, parent, or adult child who is most directly affected. Separate family programming runs in parallel — designed for spouses, for parents of adult children, and for adult children of clients — so family members are not learning about codependency, enabling, and boundaries from the same therapist running their loved one’s individual sessions. Hollywood is close enough that family members can drive up I-95 for in-person sessions and still be home for dinner; clients whose families live out of state participate by telehealth.

Local proof points, insurance, and starting treatment

RECO is in Delray Beach, in the heart of Palm Beach County’s long-established recovery community. For Hollywood-area clients, the practical considerations usually come down to three: insurance coverage, what the first week looks like, and whether the family can stay involved across the 35-mile drive. We work with most major commercial carriers — Aetna, Cigna, BlueCross BlueShield, United — and verification is handled before admission so cost is not a surprise. Our insurance verification page covers the specifics, and verification can be completed by phone in under an hour.

The first call is a clinical conversation, not a sales call. An admissions clinician will ask about drinking history, prior treatment, current medications, medical issues, and what the home situation looks like, and from that conversation a recommended level of care emerges. If detox is needed, that is arranged first. If the picture supports starting at PHP with sober-living, that is set up before the drive up from Hollywood. Call (866) 396-2008 to begin.

Common questions

From Hollywood callers, most asked.

How long is the drive from Hollywood to RECO Intensive in Delray Beach?
From most Hollywood neighborhoods, including Hollywood Beach, Hollywood Lakes, and Emerald Hills, the drive to our Delray Beach campus is about 35 miles, taking roughly 50 minutes outside of rush hour. Morning commute traffic through Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach can push that to 75 or 80 minutes, which is one reason most Hollywood clients combine PHP or residential care with on-site sober-living rather than commute daily. Family members typically drive up for weekly therapy sessions and family programming. Telehealth is available for sessions when an in-person visit is not practical.
Do you accept insurance from carriers that cover Hollywood-area employers?
We are in-network or work with most major commercial carriers used by employers across Broward County, including Aetna, Cigna, BlueCross BlueShield of Florida, and United Healthcare. Coverage for alcohol rehab typically includes detox, residential, PHP, and IOP levels of care, though the specifics depend on the policy. Our admissions team verifies benefits before admission so the family knows what is covered and what their out-of-pocket exposure looks like. Verification usually takes under an hour by phone.
Is medical detox required for alcohol use disorder?
Not always, but a medical assessment is. Whether detox is required depends on how much alcohol is being consumed, how long the pattern has gone on, whether there is a history of withdrawal seizures, and what other medical conditions are present. Clients with significant daily intake or prior complicated withdrawals are admitted to detox first. Clients with milder dependence may start at residential or PHP level with medical monitoring. The decision is made during the clinical intake using ASAM criteria, not as a default.
What medications might be used during alcohol treatment?
The two medications with the strongest evidence for alcohol use disorder are naltrexone, available as a daily oral tablet or the monthly Vivitrol injection, and acamprosate, which is taken three times daily and supports long-term abstinence. Disulfiram is used selectively in motivated clients with stable home situations. Decisions about which medication, if any, fits a given client are made by our in-house addiction psychiatrists in coordination with the primary therapist, and adjusted as treatment progresses. Medication is always offered as one component of a broader behavioral treatment plan.
How long does treatment typically last?
The full continuum from detox or residential through PHP, IOP, and into sober-living-supported outpatient usually spans about 90 days for clients who use it as designed. Some clients begin at PHP and complete the IOP step-down in 60 days; others with significant medical complexity or co-occurring conditions remain longer in residential care. The length is matched to clinical need rather than to a fixed program calendar. Aftercare and alumni programming continue indefinitely and at no additional cost after the formal levels of care are complete.
Can families from Hollywood participate in treatment even if the client stays in Delray?
Yes, and family involvement is built into the program from intake week rather than added at discharge. Spouses and parents from Hollywood Beach, Emerald Hills, and surrounding neighborhoods typically drive up I-95 once a week for the weekly family session with the primary therapist, then attend separate family programming designed specifically for partners, parents, or adult children of clients. The 35-mile distance is short enough that in-person family work is realistic for almost everyone in the Hollywood area. Sessions can also be conducted by secure telehealth when scheduling makes the drive difficult.
