Spiritual Advisor

“The spiritual awakening that recovery communities talk about is real, and it is teachable. Recovery is a spiritual discipline as much as it is a clinical one.”

Background

Rabbi Mark Rotenberg (CADC, CPC, MJE, DD) is a Spiritual Advisor at RECO Intensive with more than 25 years of experience in the recovery field. His work covers all types of addiction, intervention, and counseling, with the last 18 years focused specifically on psycho-spiritual therapy and the spiritual awakening that so often anchors long-term recovery.

Mark’s path into this work is layered. He earned his undergraduate degree in Design at San Jose State University and worked in Arts and Design for 15 years before finding sobriety. After his own recovery, he trained through UCLA’s Addiction Counselor Certificate Program and then entered Rabbinic School at the Academy for Jewish Religion in Los Angeles, where he was ordained.

Approach

Rabbi Mark’s clinical work blends spiritual and recovery texts with ancient and modern spiritual disciplines. He integrates the pragmatic 12-step framework with the inner spiritual resources of the recovering person, in a way that meets clients wherever they are — atheist, agnostic, or deeply religious.

More recently his work has focused on family education and counseling. He speaks about the “spiritual infection” that proximity to addictive behavior inflicts on loved ones, and he helps families recover their own inner ground alongside the person in treatment. His theology, born out of his own struggle with the faith of his youth, is intentionally open, inclusive, and pragmatic.
