Residential is the right level of care for some clinical pictures — typically when severity, instability, or environmental risk make outpatient unsafe. RECO coordinates residential through trusted partner facilities, but the differentiator is what comes next: a structured step-down through RECO PHP → IOP → sober-living. The Boca-to-Delray drive is short enough that the transition feels continuous, not a relocation.
If you live in Boca Raton — whether your mornings start near Mizner Park, in Royal Palm Place, or out toward Boca West — RECO Intensive’s residential coordination happens roughly eleven miles north up Federal Highway, in Delray Beach. That is a shorter drive than the run from Highland Beach to downtown Boca during season, which matters when you’re weighing whether residential is genuinely necessary or whether a PHP-with-housing model can do the same clinical work without uprooting your life. The proximity is not a marketing point; it is a clinical variable, because it shapes how family sessions, step-down planning, and aftercare connect back to the Boca community you already live in. For clients arriving from Downtown Boca or the A1A corridor, the intake assessment uses ASAM dimensions to determine whether 24-hour residential oversight is indicated, or whether a less restrictive level of care fits the presentation more accurately. The goal is matching the clinical picture, not defaulting to the highest level of care available.
When residential treatment is the right level of care
Residential treatment is not the default or the most intensive option available. It is the clinically appropriate level of care for a specific subset of clinical presentations. The ASAM criteria identify the conditions under which residential is indicated: significant withdrawal risk that requires 24-hour monitoring after acute detox, psychiatric instability that cannot be safely managed in an outpatient setting, a home or living environment that poses an immediate risk to sobriety, a history of multiple failed outpatient attempts under comparable clinical conditions, or the absence of a functional support system in the community.
For Boca Raton clients evaluating their options, the question is not whether residential is more serious than outpatient. It is whether your clinical picture matches the indications. Placing someone in residential who meets criteria for PHP is clinically unnecessary and financially burdensome. Placing someone in outpatient who needs residential oversight is clinically unsafe. The intake assessment at RECO determines which applies.
RECO’s approach to residential coordination
RECO Intensive coordinates residential treatment through trusted partner facilities with established quality standards and a working relationship with RECO’s clinical team. The key differentiator is continuity: your RECO primary therapist is involved during the residential phase, your treatment plan at the residential facility is coordinated with the plan for your subsequent PHP admission, and the transition is managed rather than improvised.
Many residential programs deliver a strong 28-day experience and then discharge clients to a standard aftercare referral list. RECO’s model is different: residential is explicitly a bridge to the PHP and IOP continuum at RECO, not a standalone intervention. The step-down is planned from the start of residential, not assembled in the final week.
What the residential to PHP transition looks like
The transition from residential to PHP at RECO is typically timed after three to four weeks of residential stabilization, once acute withdrawal has resolved, psychiatric medications have been initiated and titrated if needed, and the client is clinically ready for the increased autonomy of daily outpatient programming. The timing is a clinical decision, not a predetermined discharge date.
On the day of residential discharge, the client begins PHP at RECO. If the client needs structured housing, a bed in RECO’s sober-living network is arranged before the residential discharge. The first PHP day follows immediately. There is no gap between levels of care. The 20-minute drive from Boca Raton to RECO’s Delray Beach campus becomes part of the new daily routine.
What PHP provides that residential does not
PHP delivers something residential cannot: real-world practice. In residential, clients are protected from most of the environmental triggers, social pressures, and daily stressors that will be present in the rest of their lives. PHP allows clients to begin navigating those pressures — work obligations, family dynamics, financial stress, social situations — while still having six or more hours of daily clinical support to process what comes up. The transition from residential to PHP is not a step down in seriousness; it is a shift from a protected environment to a supported one.
The full continuum after residential
After PHP, clients step down to IOP, which typically runs 15 hours per week and continues evidence-based group and individual therapy at a reduced intensity. After IOP, a formal aftercare plan includes continued individual therapy, alumni programming, peer support, and relapse-prevention check-ins. The clinical relationship with RECO does not end at discharge from IOP. Many clients maintain contact with their RECO therapist for years after completing the formal treatment continuum.
To discuss whether residential or PHP is the appropriate starting point, call (866) 396-2008. A clinical intake coordinator can walk through the ASAM criteria with you and identify the level of care that matches the clinical picture, without pressure to choose a higher or more expensive option than what is indicated.
