Why RECO from Delray Beach

Local options exist. This is the clinical specialist.

Outpatient treatment works when it is intensive enough and clinically grounded enough to address the full complexity of addiction. RECO Intensive offers both PHP (30+ hours per week) and IOP (9-15 hours per week) at our Delray Beach campus — each paired with in-house psychiatry, individual therapy, and access to our sober-living network in the surrounding neighborhoods.

If you live in Delray Beach and are weighing outpatient addiction treatment, the practical question is usually whether you can keep your life intact while you actually do the work. RECO Intensive’s clinical campus is at 140 NE 4th Avenue, one block off Atlantic and a short walk from the Pineapple Grove arts district, which means clients from Lake Ida, Tropic Isle, Osceola Park, and the Beach District are often closer to their therapist than they are to their dentist. There is no airport, no time zone, no leaving the school carpool line for a month. The same blocks where you pick up coffee at the Green Owl or walk the dog along the Intracoastal are the blocks where PHP and IOP happen, which changes what recovery has to compete with day to day.

Two Levels of Outpatient Care, One Clinical Team

Outpatient addiction treatment is not a single thing. The difference between a standard outpatient program (once a week for an hour) and partial hospitalization (six hours a day, five days a week) is the difference between monitoring and treating. RECO Intensive offers two evidence-based, clinically intensive outpatient levels: PHP and IOP.

Both levels share the same clinical team — your primary therapist, psychiatry access, and case manager do not change as you step down. What changes is the number of hours per week and the amount of structure in your daily schedule.

Who Outpatient Treatment Is Right For

Outpatient treatment — even at the PHP level — requires a stable enough living environment that the hours outside of programming do not undo the work happening inside it. It is appropriate for clients who:

  • Have completed medical detox and are medically stable
  • Are stepping down from residential care and ready for more autonomy
  • Have a substance use disorder that does not require 24-hour supervision but needs more than weekly therapy
  • Have family, work, or other responsibilities that make inpatient treatment impractical

RECO’s admissions team will conduct a clinical assessment — using ASAM criteria — to determine whether PHP, IOP, or a higher level of care is clinically indicated. We do not place clients in a less intensive level of care than they need.

What PHP and IOP Look Like at RECO

PHP at RECO runs five days a week, approximately six hours per day, for a total of 30+ clinical hours per week. Programming includes evidence-based group therapy (CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing), individual sessions with your primary therapist, psychiatric evaluation and medication management when indicated, and experiential therapies. Most PHP clients reside at a RECO sober-living residence in Delray Beach neighborhoods during treatment — this keeps the clinical environment consistent through the evening hours.

IOP runs three to five days per week at 3-5 hours per session, totaling 9-15 hours per week. It is structured for clients who are clinically stable and rebuilding their daily lives — returning to work, reconnecting with family, re-engaging with community. IOP clients often live at home or in sober-living housing in neighborhoods like Pineapple Grove or Lake Ida.

Outpatient Treatment for Specific Substances

Outpatient programming at RECO is not generic. Groups are often organized by clinical presentation, and therapy content is adapted to the specific substance involved. Alcohol use disorder groups address different relapse triggers than opioid use disorder groups. Stimulant recovery presents different cravings and mood patterns than sedative recovery. Your clinical team will also address any co-occurring mental health conditions throughout outpatient care — not defer them to later.

The Role of Delray Beach’s Recovery Community in Outpatient Care

Outpatient treatment works in part because real life serves as the clinical context — what happens outside of programming becomes the material for what is processed inside it. Delray Beach has one of the densest recovery communities in South Florida: daily 12-step meetings, SMART Recovery groups, sober social events, and peer support networks within walking distance of our campus near Pineapple Grove and the Atlantic Avenue corridor. Outpatient clients at RECO are actively connected to this community as part of treatment, not left to find it on their own after discharge.

For clients living in Delray Beach neighborhoods like Sundy Estates, Tropic Isle, or Lake Ida, the combination of RECO’s clinical programming and the city’s peer recovery infrastructure creates an unusually strong recovery environment — one that continues to support sobriety well after formal outpatient treatment concludes. The commute to our campus at 140 NE 4th Ave is measured in minutes, not hours, which means clients can maintain employment, parental responsibilities, and community ties throughout outpatient care.

Insurance and Admissions for Outpatient Treatment

Both PHP and IOP are covered levels of care under most major insurance plans when clinically indicated. RECO accepts Florida Blue, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, and BCBS. Our admissions team verifies benefits same-day and provides a plain-language cost estimate before you commit. Prior authorization for PHP is handled by our team — you do not need to navigate the insurance process independently. To begin, visit our admissions page or call (866) 396-2008. For Delray Beach residents, an in-person meeting with an admissions counselor at our campus is also available.

Serving residents of: Pineapple Grove, Downtown Delray, Lake Ida, Tropic Isle, Atlantic Avenue corridor, Sundy Estates.

Common questions

From Delray Beach callers, most asked.

What is the difference between PHP and IOP at RECO Intensive?
PHP (partial hospitalization) involves 30 or more clinical hours per week — typically six hours a day, five days a week — and is paired with sober-living housing for most clients. IOP (intensive outpatient) runs 9-15 hours per week and allows clients to live at home or in sober living while resuming daily responsibilities. PHP is the more intensive level, appropriate for clients stepping down from residential care or those with more acute clinical needs. Both share the same clinical team.
Can I work or take care of children while attending IOP?
IOP is specifically designed to accommodate daily responsibilities. With 9-15 hours of programming per week spread across multiple shorter sessions, most clients can maintain employment and family commitments. Schedule flexibility depends on group availability — our admissions team will discuss morning and afternoon options with you during intake. PHP requires a full-day commitment and is generally not compatible with full-time work.
Do I have to live at a sober-living residence during outpatient treatment?
Sober-living residency is required for most PHP clients and strongly recommended for IOP clients in early recovery. The clinical reasoning is straightforward: what happens in the hours outside of programming significantly affects treatment outcomes. If your home environment is stable, supportive, and free of substances, home-based living during IOP may be appropriate. The admissions team will assess this during your clinical screening.
How does RECO determine whether I need PHP or IOP?
Placement is based on ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) criteria — a standardized clinical assessment that evaluates severity of withdrawal risk, medical and psychiatric co-occurring conditions, readiness to change, recovery environment, and relapse potential. We do not place clients in outpatient care because it is less expensive or more convenient; placement decisions are clinically driven.
Is psychiatry included in outpatient addiction treatment at RECO?
Yes. In-house psychiatry is available to all PHP and IOP clients. If a co-occurring condition like depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder is identified during assessment, a psychiatric evaluation is scheduled within the first week of treatment. Medication management, when appropriate, is handled by our licensed psychiatric staff — not referred out to a separate provider.
What happens after outpatient treatment ends?
RECO's continuum extends beyond PHP and IOP through sober-living housing, an active alumni program, and structured aftercare planning. Before you discharge from IOP, your clinical team develops a continuing care plan that may include weekly outpatient therapy, peer support groups, ongoing psychiatric care, and alumni check-ins. Recovery does not have a finish line at discharge, and RECO's aftercare programming is built around that reality.
What does the commute from a Delray Beach neighborhood to RECO's outpatient program actually look like?
From most Delray Beach neighborhoods the drive to 140 NE 4th Avenue is under 10 minutes outside of season. From Tropic Isle or the Beach District it is a straight shot up Federal Highway or A1A; from Lake Ida it is a few minutes down Swinton or NE 2nd Avenue into Pineapple Grove. In season (roughly January through March), Atlantic Avenue traffic can add 10 to 15 minutes around the lunch hour and early evening, so PHP clients with 9 a.m. starts are asked to leave a buffer. Clients coming from west of I-95 typically take Atlantic east to Federal, then a few blocks north. Parking is available on-site and in the public garage on NE 1st Street.
How is outpatient treatment at RECO different from the smaller local outpatient programs in Delray Beach?
Delray Beach has a dense recovery community and a number of small outpatient practices, most of which operate at the standard outpatient level (one to three hours a week) and refer out for psychiatry, medication management, and trauma work. RECO Intensive runs full PHP (about 30 clinical hours a week) and IOP (9 to 15 hours) with an in-house psychiatry team, medication-assisted treatment including naltrexone, acamprosate, buprenorphine, and Vivitrol, and clinicians trained in CBT, DBT, MI, and EMDR under one roof. The practical difference is that a Delray Beach resident does not have to assemble a treatment team across four offices; the primary therapist, prescriber, case manager, and trauma clinician are coordinating with each other on the same chart.
