First responders carry clinical material civilian-only programs can't fully engage. Operational trauma, line-of-duty PTSD, the unique stigma around mental-health and addiction help-seeking in service cultures, career and licensure concerns — these need specialty care. RECO Intensive's First Responders track is built for the population that has been underserved by traditional addiction treatment.
What the First Responders track includes
Coordinated specialty care across the standard treatment continuum, with clinical adaptations for the population. Confidentiality is taken with particular seriousness given career and licensure stakes. Peer community of fellow first responders is a clinical asset — see also our Behind the Barracks group.
What's specifically adapted
- Trauma-informed care trained for line-of-duty and operational trauma — EMDR is core
- Cultural competence — clinicians experienced in first-responder communication, dark humor, mission-focus, and the stigma layer
- Career and licensure navigation — coordination with peer-support and physician/agency-recovery programs where applicable
- Family work for the unique strain frontline careers place on partners and children
- Peer community — the Behind the Barracks group brings other first responders into the same clinical space
- Sleep and shift-work-related recovery — first-responder sleep dysregulation often drives substance use
Who this track serves
Active and former police officers, firefighters, EMS, paramedics, corrections officers. Military veterans (often served by both First Responders and the Veterans track depending on context). Family members of first responders whose own care needs have been displaced by years of supporting a service member.
What recovery looks like for first responders
Same continuum as standard recovery — detox if needed, residential or PHP, IOP, sober living, aftercare — with the specialty-track clinical adaptations layered in. Many first-responder clients describe RECO as the first clinical setting where they didn't have to translate themselves to be understood.
Why RECO's First Responders track is different
Many programs market to first responders without delivering specialty-trained clinical care. Ours is staffed with clinicians who actually understand the population and its specific needs — and the peer group is the rest of what makes the work possible.
